No better place to start than with America’s first president.

It’s known through correspondence and other documentation that George Washington did not enjoy the warmest of relationships with his wife Martha. That frosty relationship has led to two famous claims about Washington, neither of which has been concretely proven.

The first, and far more likely, is that Washington fathered a child with one of the slaves who lived on his Virginia estate. Descendants of the woman, known as Venus, have been pushing for a DNA test for years.

The second, less likely theory postulates that Washington may have been homosexual. This mainly stems from his involvement with Freemasonry, which was often decried as a club for homosexuals during Washington’s lifetime.
